The music of Ireland from the pages of the Companion to Irish Traditional Music

Editor:  Fintan Vallely

Playing against a big-screen backdrop of photos by Jacques Nutan

Compánach is a concert of Irish music in its place - from all 32 counties on the island - a collaboration of photography and live music. Each enhances the other – an interplay of sound, sight and imagination which effortlessly conveys a large amount of contextual and stylistic information on Irish-Traditional music  from the 1700s up to modern time. The playing is seamless, but rapidly-changing, some 90 tunes running without commentary in 25 sets. The narrative is subliminal, generated by some 800 images. Some of these are historical, but the bulk are photos by Jacques Nutan. His landscapes and personalities have independent dramatic power, they greatly expand the music experience and side-step the linguistic barriers which can often curtail comprehension among the diverse nationalities who listen to and perform Irish Traditional music.

An intimate acoustic recital of music and song from Gerry O'Connor, Fintan Vallely, Tiarnán Ó Duinnchín and Máire Ní Choilm which interprets the nature, scope and quality of Irish Traditional music as described in the encyclopedia Companion to Irish Traditional Music.

Based on the A-Z format of the book, the fast-moving concert deals with music from all Irish regions and abroad, as well as detailing and demonstrating all the hallmark aspects of decoration, style and repertoire. The music and song are suffused with energy and warmth by the use of a flow of fullscreen, backing images from the lens of award-winning photographer Jacques Piraprez Nutan, a long-term resident of Ireland who has captured every aspect of Irish life and scenery, most beautifully music and musicians.

For lovers of Irish music and for students of Irish Studies alike this is a structured music show which is packed with solo and group performances of music and song: a unique display which presents music, images and information as a rounded aesthetic experience.

Performance can be  one  x 1 hour 15 mins, or two x 45 min presentations
